Baray Bhai

A tap on my window,

I shield my eyes from the bright sun,

The light that comes from outside.

A tap on my window,

I look up from my book.

A tap on my window,

“Baray Bhai”

the words pleading

Big brother.

A tap on my window,

Mickey Mouse stickers in his bony hand,

Offering them to me,

Bright eyes, Ribcage showing.

A tap on my window,

A boy no older than nine,

Working in the hot sun,

While I sit in the air conditioned Land Cruiser.

A tap on my window,

My driver shooing him away.

A tap on my window,

The signal light turns green,

And my car leaves him behind.
